St. Elmo's Fire
Taken at 35,000' enroute from Campinas, Brazil to Memphis, TN April 30, 2003
Over the equator north-bound when going through some dying thunderstorm tops at 35,000'. Temperature was -45°C. This static discharge makes a very impressive display on the nose of the airplane from passing through the dry ice crystals. This lasted off and on for a few minutes at a time for about an hour. We had very poor - virtually no - radio communications with Manaus Control and Maiquetia Control (Caracas) in the severe precipitation static for over an hour.
